Second Grave on the Left Review

Second Grave on the Left by Darynda Jones

Genre:  Adult Fiction

Publisher: St. Martin’s Press

Source: Public Library

Book Description:

Charley Davidson, Grim Reaper Extraordinaire, is back in this sexy, suspenseful novel of supernatural shenanigans

When Charley is rudely awakened in the middle of the night by her best friend who tells her to get dressed quickly and tosses clothes out of the closet at her, she can’t help but wonder what Cookie’s up to. Leather scrunch boots with a floral miniskirt? Together? Seriously? Cookie explains that a friend of hers named Mimi disappeared five days earlier and that she just got a text from her setting up a meet at a coffee shop downtown. They show up at the coffee shop, but no Mimi. But Charley finds a message on the bathroom wall. Mimi left a clue, a woman’s name. Mimi’s husband explains that his wife had been acting strange since she found out an old friend of hers from high school had been found murdered a couple weeks prior. The same woman Mimi had named in her message.

Meanwhile, Reyes Alexander Farrow (otherwise known as the Son of Satan. Yes. Literally) has left his corporeal body and is haunting Charley. He’s left his body because he’s being tortured by demons who want to lure Charley closer. But Reyes can’t let that happen. Because if the demons get to Charley, they’ll have a portal to heaven. And if they have a portal to heaven…well, let’s just say it wouldn’t be pretty. Can Charley handle hot nights with Reyes and even hotter days tracking down a missing woman? Will Cookie ever get a true fashion sense? And is there enough coffee and chocolate in the world to fuel them as they do?

Review

This is the second book in this series and it’s funny and full of action.  Charley is a PI and a grim reaper who has the Son of Satan protecting her and saving her life.

Charley and Cookie are working a case where a friend of Cookie is missing.  They are investigating even though they’ve been told to back off.  Charley is like a dog with a bone and refuses to be threatened off a case.

Charley discovers things she didn’t know she possessed when she and Reyes are fighting off the demons out to destroy his body.  Charley’s family reveals what they know about her and she discovers why they’ve acted the way they have around her.

If you want a fun summer read then you’ll love this series.  You’ll fall in love with Charley and can’t wait for the next book.

Friday Factoid

                      FRIDAY FACTOID

This is a meme that I started.  Every Friday I’ll put a factoid based on a book I’m reading. The book can be fiction or non-fiction If you want to participate, just leave a comment and your website to share.

I’m currently reading Second Grave on the Left by Darynda Jones. The main character,Charlotte, in the book is a grim reaper. According to Wikipedia,

The concept of death as a sentient entity has existed in many societies since the beginning of history. In English, Death is often given the name Grim Reaper and, from the 15th century onwards, came to be shown as a skeletal figure carrying a large scythe and clothed in a black cloak with a hood. It is also given the name of the Angel of Death or Devil of Death or the angel of dark and light (Malach HaMavet) stemming from the Bible and Talmudic lore. The Bible itself does not refer to "The Angel of Death;" there is, however, a reference to "Abaddon" (The Destroyer), an Angel who is known as the "The Angel of the Abyss". In Talmudic lore, he is characterized as archangel Samael.
In some cases, the Grim Reaper is able to actually cause the victim's death leading to tales that he can be bribed, tricked, or outwitted in order to retain one's life, such as in the case of Sisyphus. Other beliefs hold that the Spectre of Death is only a psychopomp, serving to sever the last ties between the soul and the body and to guide the deceased to the next world without having any control over the fact of the victim's death. In many languages (including English), Death is personified in male form, while in others, it is perceived as a female character (for instance, in Slavic and Romance languages).

Cookie was a lot like orange juice on white pants. She could be either grating or funny, depending on who was wearing the white pants.

Emperor's Tomb Review

Emperor’s Tomb by Steve Berry

Genre:  Adult Fiction

Publisher: Ballantine

Source: Personal Library

Book Description:

Cotton Malone teams with old heartthrob Cassiopeia Vitt on a dangerous mission to retrieve a priceless Chinese lamp from the third century B.C.E. in Berry's rousing fifth thriller to feature the ex-federal agent (after The Paris Vendetta). Two high-ranking Chinese government ministers, hard-liner Karl Tang and more liberal Ni Yong, both of whom are vying to be China's next premier, covet the lamp. Tang, in particular, has left a trail of bodies in his own quest for the lamp, which, unbeknownst to Malone and Vitt, contains the secret to how the country will surmount its biggest obstacle to future economic growth, its dependence on foreign oil. Berry layers his narrative with well-chosen, if sometimes overly detailed, doses of Chinese history. His action sequences, particularly a shootout inside the vast network of an underground tomb, often take too long to resolve, though the payoff in the end--a goose-pimple–raising showdown in a remote monastery--is worth the wait.

Review

This is one of my favorite authors.  I’ve read several of the Cotton Malone books and I’m never disappointed.  If you like Indiana Jones or Clive Cussler then you’ll enjoy this book.

You don’t need to read these in order to enjoy them.  If you like history, adventure and non-stop action then Steve Berry will become your next favorite author.

Steve and his wife have started an organization to help people understand why history matters. To learn more check out why he started this organization click here: http://www.steveberry.org/berry-history.htm.

I love the history in each story and the interaction between Cotton and Cassiopeia.  It is fun to see the dance between the two of them and you want to see how it ends.

I’m currently reading The Emperor’s Tomb by Steve Berry and it mentions China’s First Emperor Qin Shi Huang. According to Wikipedia,

Qin Shi Huang () (259 BC – 210 BC),[1][2] personal name Ying Zheng (嬴政), was king of the Chinese State of Qin from 246 BC to 221 BC during the Warring States Period.[3] He became the first emperor of a unified China in 221 BC.[3] He ruled until his death in 210 BC at the age of 49.[4]
Calling himself the First Emperor (始皇帝) after China's unification, Qin Shi Huang is a pivotal figure in Chinese history, ushering nearly two millennia of imperial rule. After unifying China, he and his chief advisor Li Si passed a series of major economic and political reforms.[3] He undertook gigantic projects, including building and unifying various sections of the Great Wall of China, the now famous city-sized mausoleum guarded by a life-sized Terracotta Army, and a massive national road system, all at the expense of numerous lives. However, Qin Shi Huang outlawed and burned many books and buried some scholars alive to force workers to work harder[4] and to punish.

Mine is one p. 48 of Anne of Hollywood by Carol Wolper

I’m not looking forward to what’s coming but the second I can make Henry laugh all my anxiety disappears. That beautiful hearty laugh of his captivates me and the way he looks at me, with such delight, makes it obvious that he and I have a special connection and Larissa is about as significant as a couple of melting ice cubes at the bottom of an empty cocktail glass.

Three Times Lucky Review

Three Times Lucky by Sheila Turnage (May 10, 2012)

Genre:  Middle Grade ARC

Publisher: Dial

Source: Shelf Awareness win
Book Description:

A hilarious Southern debut with the kind of characters you meet once in a lifetime

Rising sixth grader Miss Moses LoBeau lives in the small town of Tupelo Landing, NC, where everyone's business is fair game and no secret is sacred. She washed ashore in a hurricane eleven years ago, and she's been making waves ever since. Although Mo hopes someday to find her "upstream mother," she's found a home with the Colonel--a café owner with a forgotten past of his own--and Miss Lana, the fabulous café hostess. She will protect those she loves with every bit of her strong will and tough attitude. So when a lawman comes to town asking about a murder, Mo and her best friend, Dale Earnhardt Johnson III, set out to uncover the truth in hopes of saving the only family Mo has ever known.

Full of wisdom, humor, and grit, this timeless yarn will melt the heart of even the sternest Yankee.

Review

This was a fun read and I highly recommend it for your girls or boys.  You will fall in love with Mo.

This book has a lot of adventure and mystery and laughs.  If you have a child that likes mysteries or adventure stories then they’ll enjoy this book.  This book is funny and is a good representation of small town life.  Even though Mo, doesn’t know where she was born or who her “upstream” mother is, she has a family that loves her and she discovers it in this book.

I hope this author continues Mo’s story because she’s that lovable and you want to know what else happens to her.

Mine is one p. 1 of First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones

I’d been having the same dream for the past month-the one where a dark stranger materialized out of smoke and shadows to play doctor with me. I was starting to wonder if repetitive exposure to nightly hallucinations resulting in earth-shattering climaxes could have any long-term side effects.
